Mosaics
The mosaic technique consists of the
pictorial representation by means of small pieces of stone or coloured or
golden glass.
This technique was widely used during Greek-Roman
times, and was the privileged way of expression in the areas under
Byzantine influence. In Venice this technique reached extremely high
levels, and the Basilica of San Marco is full of them both inside and on
the exterior facades.
The mosaic is the most durable system of
decoration known, and the one in which colours do not alter, thanks to the
fact that the small pieces are cooked before being used.
The mosaic was made as team work, and each
person had specific defined tasks. The tesseras where obtained by banging
with a hammer a large piece of glass or of stone.
The surface is covered with one or two
layers of cement, which is slightly striped so that the following layer
will adhere better. The drawing is then sketched and on
the top a thin layer of grout is spread. On this surface is
painted
the image to be reproduced, often using models in smaller scale, and using
all of the definitive colours.
Lastly, the tesseras are applied, inserting
them for two thirds in the layer of grout, and giving them different inclinations
so that they will reflect light in different ways. The tesseras, which are
set irregularly, have variable space in between each other.
The mosaics which we offer are made by
the artisan Mino, who works in his laboratory hidden in the
alleys of the district of Cannaregio, working with the ancient
Byzantine
technique and creating objects for home decoration,
frames and mosaics of large dimensions.
